Conversations
Over the past month, I've engaged in discussions with four individuals who share a similar background. Each of these conversations revolved around a common theme: the contemplation of returning to India for retirement. These individuals, all Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who migrated to the US in the late 90s or early 2000s, have established themselves professionally, with their children either growing up or beginning college.
Their considerations for returning to India stemmed from a variety of factors, including societal and personal concerns:
- Wokeism, LGBTism, and the state of moral values- they expressed apprehensions about what they perceived as societal changes in the US, particularly regarding issues such as gender identity and moral values. They were vocal about the influence of certain political movements on younger generations. They spoke at lengths about how Democrats are poisoning kids' minds into considering gender change.
- Flawed policies on uncontrolled immigration - How military-age men from across the globe are crossing over into the US from Mexico, leading to an increase in crime rates, homelessness, and people staying on government subsidies
- Healthcare Affordability: As they approach retirement age, healthcare costs in the US have become a significant consideration. Many felt uncertain about their ability to afford quality healthcare as they grew older.
- Quality of Life in India: Participants highlighted the appeal of returning to India for the support of extended family, access to domestic help such as maids and drivers, and a sense of cultural familiarity.
- Deteriorating public safety issues - the significant increase in Gun Violence and Violent crimes, Drug addiction, and how scary downtown areas of key US cities have become
Additionally, they expressed admiration for the strides India has made as a nation over the past decade. While it was heartening to hear their positive perspectives on India's development, the coincidence of four individuals contemplating a return to India around the same time sparked my curiosity. I guess a lot will depend on how the US elections turn out.
