"Consumption Revolution: Unveiling a Century of Growth and Opportunity"

In 2008, then-US President George W. Bush made a statement that drew attention to the role of India's burgeoning middle class in the rising global food prices. His observation highlighted that India's vast middle-class population of 350 million, larger than the entire population of the United States, was contributing to increased demand for better nutrition and food quality. This surge in demand, he suggested, was a driving force behind the escalating prices.

Although this message lacked precision in its delivery, it echoed the sentiment that the evolving dynamics of India's middle class were making a significant impact on the global stage. Fast forward 15 years later, Bob Sternfels, CEO of McKinsey & Co, proclaimed that India was on the cusp of not just a decade, but an entire century of prominence.

Sternfels described India's trajectory as transformative and comprehensive. He outlined key factors that set the stage for India's ascent, including a sizable working population, multinational corporations redefining global supply chains, and a digital leapfrogging phenomenon that could reshape not only India's economy but potentially the world's.

This optimism is based on the premise that India is poised to become the world's future technology powerhouse. By the year 2047, projections suggest that India will account for a staggering 20 percent of the global working population.

In the upcoming series of blogs, I will delve into India's Consumption Theme. Fueled by rising disposable incomes, an expanding middle class, a generation of ambitious young individuals, and a shift toward premium products, a promising landscape for robust growth across various sectors emerges. Consequently, the consumption theme stands as a beacon of opportunity for consistent, long-term growth and performance.

In future blogs I will list out some themes and associated companies, It's important to note that the intention here is not to focus on specific companies or endorse particular stocks. Rather, the aim is to explore various categories within the consumption theme. During the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, I embarked on some preliminary research and made investments in select categories within this theme.
